The anger caused in Italy, in the middle of the August, showing that men in a Facebook group called Mia Moglie, translation as “my wife”, distributed photos of their wives along with humiliating comments.
Access to the team was very easy, and viewing content was extremely annoying.
Photos of women – some were clearly shot secret, others who probably had to remain private in a conversation or marriage – insulting comments followed.
Some were sometimes, but inappropriate, others were hyperactive, and some were obscene, with texts not written on the information web site.
The team was created in 2019 and began working in May 2025, META EURONEWS Next said. On August 18, Mia could have come to the fore when writer and screenwriter Carolina Kapria published an instant photograph of the team on Instagram and called on people to report this. At that time, the team considered about 32,000 members.
After several complaints filed in the meta and local authorities, the technological giant closed the team on August 20 for violating his policy in the field of sexual exploitation of adults, META representative in Italian newspapers said, and then confirmed EURONEWS.
According to this policy, among other things, Meta prohibits the exchange or threat of the distribution of personal images that are not coordinating, whether it is real or fantastic. It also prohibits the hidden images of the general -like parts of the house and their disclosure, the threat of notification or the expression of intention to disseminate private sexual interpretation from the act without consent.
“We do not allow content that threatens or helps sexual violence, sexual violence or sexual exploitation on our platforms,” the representative added.
Despite the closure of MIA, national news agencies reported on the emergence of new channels with the same purpose on social networks as Facebook and Telegram, although at present with fewer participants.
But how long will it take for a viral new team? And, most importantly, how is it possible on the platforms, as large and affordable as Meta?
Is META policy quite effective in unfulfilled images?
META – Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Thread – solve problems such as sexual violence and not agreed images in various parts of their general community standards. However, reality in this area often seems different from what is written on paper.
Mia could not be a new, excellent phenomenon. In 2017, Facebook closed the French team called Babylone 2.0, where more than 50,000 members exchanged personal images of women without their consent.
And in 2024, the half -dependent council of META observers, the Council for Supervision, called on the technological giant to make more to combat the non -consonant, naked deep -farming on his platforms.
“The current META policy is inadequate,” said EURONEWS NEXT NEXT NEXT Next, ”said Sylvia Semenzin, digital sociologist and post -class researcher at Madrid University, Madrid University, Madrid University.
“Violence on the basis of floors on the Internet was also smooth on the meta -platforms, and with impunity this is a rule, and not an exception,” she said.
The center report in 2024 on the consideration of digital hatred shown that Instagram could not act in 93% of insulting comments intended for famous US politicians (USA) on Instagram.
According to Semenzin, the META approach is largely focused on protecting children, which he considers “important, but not sufficient” in the fight against sex -based violence.
A similar point of view is a lawyer Katie La Torre, who explained that although META does not slowly act in disagreeing images of ordinary people, she quickly responds to cases of sexual violence against children or commercial content.
In the first case, the rapid action reflects the strong sensitivity of the United States, where the technological giant is based on the sexual exploitation of children. In the latter, it can be explained as an intention to protect the financial interests of the platform using industries, such as advertising.
La Torre added that Meta has some important strategies to combat sex -based violence, but does not promote them enough.
For example, the company is based on “entrusted flags”, insurmountable organizations recognized by the company to cope with illegal Internet content. The Italian Union of Persissso Neguto is such an organization and offers technological and legal support to the victims of personal images without consent and violence on the Internet. Nevertheless, only a few data about this reliable flagship appear on the meta channels.
“Meta does not say this and does not do this, because moderation is expensive, and they prefer to control these problems with the help of artificial intelligence,” said La Torre.
The hint of reducing the importance of moderation on the meta -platforms appeared in early 2025, when META General Director Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company would gradually cancel American auditors.
Then Euronews contacted Meta to respond to these accusations, but the company did not answer during the publication.
Meta is not the only thing to blame
According to Sannsin and La Torre, Meta is not the only culprit: international institutions, as well as the Italian political system, also bear some responsibility.
“Regulators must ensure compliance with the Law on Digital Services (DSA) and similar framework with much stronger supervision, sanctions and transparent requirements,” said Semenzin Euronews Next.
The Law on Digital Services of the European Union (DSA) establishes rules to protect consumer rights on the Internet. The regulation, which entered into force in 2024, was welcomed by experts as a critical, but only the first step towards the protection of digital rights.
Italy also bears part of the responsibility in this story, according to Katie La Torre.
“If lawmakers vote for laws, then the platforms must comply with them. But in Italy, we do not adopt these laws, because people in parliament and government do not know about cyberspace. ”
This shortage of knowledge is also reflected in a wider population. According to the European Commission on the digital decade of 2024, in 2023, only 45.8% of people on the peninsula had at least basic digital skills, much lower than the EU average (55.6%).
In recent years, other EU countries have taken strict legislative measures against basic social networks. For example, in 2017, Germany adopted a law that obliges the platforms of social networks to identify and delete content, which violates German rules for inciting hatred.
Italian legislation seems to be not so considered for the regulation of technological giants as German. Nevertheless, the Italian authority of competition (Agcom) without hesitation imposed fines on META on data management and unfair competition.
Regardless of who is responsible for the termination of the distribution of images not related to coordination, one thing can be said for sure: the problem is not exclusively for the meta -platforms.
Soon after the case of MIA, another online forum could be at the center of Italy: Phica.eu.
The forum was created in 2005, there were thousands of subscribers and general personal photographs, Deepfakes and other types of images of both famous and unknown women for the Italian public, including the minister -minister Georgia Meloni.
After many years of reports and complaints, the forum closed last week.
However, when it comes to cyberspace, the question remains unanswered: what happens with images, as soon as they spread on the Internet?
