Death toll rises to 205 due to worst DANA of the century. He Emergency Center of the Generalitat Valenciana has confirmed that it has been able to verify that so far 202 people have lost their lives due to the catastrophic cold fall in the Valencian Community. To this figure we must add the 2 deaths in Castile-La Mancha and another person in Andalusia.
CECOPI reported that “the process of investigation and identification of victims continues”, as reported by the 112 service through a message on its official profile of the social network X, formerly Twitter.
Despite this, the government reported that there were still “dozens of people missing” in the rubble of Valencian municipalities affected by DANA. “We cannot confirm this number, but it is clear that the more days pass and they do not appear, the more likely it is that we will not have the hope of finding them alive,” lamented this Thursday the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Angel Victor Torres. He did so during the press conference which followed the meeting of the Crisis Committee, held in Moncloa.
This same Friday, thousands of Valencian citizens travel on foot as volunteers to help the villages affected by DANA, in the metropolitan area that surrounds the provincial capital. People who decided to make the pilgrimage took with them buckets, shovels, brooms, mops, jugs of water and carts with food. The journey they had to travel on foot in some cases exceeded 10 kilometers.
Volunteers on foot from Valencia
One of the tasks carried out by these neighbors, organized spontaneously, was the organization of traffic on the pedestrian path that crosses the V-30 highway and the new canal of the Turia river, which made it possible to avoid a even greater tragedy in the capital.
Affected citizens have asked to be given water, food, but also tools with which they can work in the streets to try, at least, to make their way through the mud, water and destruction: rakes, shovels and hoes. And most importantly, they asked for help to help repair much of the damage caused by DANA.
The young people of the Valencian capital came on foot, while other people with agricultural machinery also chose to take these heavy vehicles to remove the large amount of material and the damage that DANA caused in the streets and in homes people. Valencians.
Although this situation already occurred Thursday afternoon and evening, it is now that we are seeing a greater influx of neighbors ready to help. In the images you can see how a constant stream of people crossed the bridge on foot carrying materials to help and food for the affected neighbors.
Despite this, the Government of the Valencian Generalitat has requested, “out of deep gratitude”, that citizens do not come to help the affected areas. “The access roads are collapsing and emergency services cannot access them,” they indicate on the official profile of the social network X, formerly Twitter. “Thank you for your understanding and solidarity,” he concludes.
