He died at the age of 69 Antonio Romero Ruiz (Humilladero, Málaga), former Secretary General of the Communist Party and regional deputy of Izquierda Unida for several terms until March 2008, when he abandoned institutional activity. The former Andalusian parliamentarian began his political career under the dictatorship, in 1972, when he joined the Spanish Communist Party.

Antonio Romero aspired to become president of the Regional Government of Andalusia in 2000 and was one of the scourges in Andalusia of the corruption seen in the governments of Felipe González, when the GAL broke in. In his farewell to public activity, he assured: “I am leaving light with baggage, with the mobilizations for the full autonomy of Andalusia and the death of [José Manuel García] Caparrós always in my memories.

Antonio Romero He had suffered from Parkinson’s disease for over a decade.. As his health increasingly deteriorated, he continued to keep his political activity out of the spotlight. He traveled to Malaga from his city to attend the rally led by Yolanda Díaz in the 2023 municipal elections campaign. The Vice President of the Government was one of those who paid tribute to him on her X account. “Our beloved Antonio Romero died, who showed that dignity is more than a word, it is the basis on which to build all our policies. May the earth be light to you, partner,” he posted.
