The Balearic trade mourns the death, at the age of 85, of Démetrio Pena, key figure in Mallorca’s trade associations. He served as president of Pimem and Pimeco and was a strong advocate for small businesses.
He was also the creator of the Deixalles Foundationcomposed 50% by the Bishopric of Majorca and 50% by Pimem. For this initiative and others like the campaigns Don’t throw it away He is considered a pioneer in the introduction and promotion of recycling in Mallorca. Within this trade organization he established the Household Appliance Traders Association. In 2006 he received ththe Ramon Llull prize in recognition of his work in favor of trade.
From the Employers’ Association of Small Businesses, Demetrio Peña has maintained harsh confrontations with the government to defend the sector and against the arrival of department stores. In 2000 he organized an unprecedented commercial strike and lockout which had great success throughout Mallorca.
His funeral wake will take place this Monday, November 18 from 5:00 p.m. at the Son Valentí Morgue. The funeral will take place on the 20th at 8:00 p.m. in the Santa Catalina Thomàs church, in Santa Pagesa Square.
