“The Government of Azerbaijan is working hard to organize COP29 and ensure its successful outcome, and expects significant progress on climate change issues from this conference.”
This was stated by Dennis Francis, President of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, in response to a question from the US office of the “Report” at the UN headquarters in New York.
D. Francis said that during his presidency he met with the COP29 team in Azerbaijan and closely followed the preparations.
He added that the most anticipated aspect of COP29 is an increase in funding for climate crisis prevention:
“Addressing the climate crisis remains a pressing issue. Increased funding is needed. We welcomed the creation of a loss and damage fund at COP28 last year. It was indeed the right step, and several countries, including the US, some European countries and the UAE, supported these activities. It is clear that the fund needs a major revitalisation as loss and damage continue to rise year on year. We cannot make progress on climate change without the funding needed to implement reforms.
