Deputy Mayor of Pontevedra, Cangas, Resigns After Positive Breathalyzer Test

Socialist Iria Malvido, first deputy mayor of Cangas (Pontevedra), will present her resignation as city councilor this Thursday after testing positive in a breathalyzer test last Tuesday. The decision was communicated by the PSdeG in a statement, in which it is stated that Malvido informed the provincial secretary, David Regades, of the measure he was going to take.

The current deputy mayor was arrested at a checkpoint during the feast of Christ and the result exceeded the threshold of a criminal offence. The socialist, according to Europa Press, apologizes to the public, assumes her responsibility “without excuses of any kind” and communicates her decision to resign without waiting for the decision of the Federal Commission for Ethics and Guarantees of the party.

On Wednesday, another previous statement already included his public apology and announced that he had withdrawn from the PSdeG-PSOE, pending what the Ferraz Ethics Commission had determined, the competent body since it was a criminal offense. However, initially, he was going to continue to sit on the city council.

Later in the afternoon, the BNG of Cangas had already warned that it would expel Malvido from the government – led by the nationalist Araceli Gestido, although Esquerda Unida is also part of it – if it were not for the PSOE, which, on its own initiative, replaced Malvido as first deputy mayor, who had once abandoned the socialist ranks.

However, on Wednesday night, the councilor herself announced in a statement that she was leaving the Corporation after a “serious mistake in her private life.” The provincial secretary, David Regades, thanked the deputy mayor for her gesture and her “political and personal maturity after a mistake.” The leader of the Pontevedra Socialists affirms that the party not only demands exemplarity from civil servants, “but also practices it in person, however painful it may be.”

Malvido hopes that his resignation “will be a grain of sand to defend this policy with capital letters” which, he says, has “always” affirmed: “I made a serious mistake and I assume the personal and political consequences.”
