Despite the Prisme project, access to sports equipment for people with disabilities remains limited

A giant well of light. At the metropolitan centre for sport and inclusiveness (Prisme), in Bobigny, in Seine-Saint-Denis, natural lighting takes pride of place in this new 13,000-square-metre structure, designed to accommodate all audiences, healthy or disabled. Surrounded by ramps serving three different levels. In this complex, whose work will be completed in early autumn and which should open its doors in November, it will be possible to access two multi-sports fields, a climbing wall, a weapons room, an area dedicated to petanque, a balneotherapy pool and an area reserved for research and development of para-sport.

“The Prisma is a rather unique structure in Europe, it is aimed at all types of disabilities, including mental disabilities”explains Noé Laurent, project director of the departmental council. Relaxation rooms are available in various areas of the complex, and in the multi-sport areas, LEDs integrated into the courts will illuminate only the lines necessary for the activity in progress, in order to facilitate practice for people with cognitive impairments. These provisions are the result of suggestions gathered during consultations with some 200 structures, clubs and associations consulted during the development of the project.

Under construction since October 2022, the building It is one of the buildings linked to Paris’ bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games. “The Games were an accelerator for the project”Laurent says, because the beginnings of the place date back to 2010.

“Priorities for local actors”

Initially scheduled for spring 2024, Prisme’s opening was delayed due to “Bad weather at the beginning of the year slowed down construction”“This project represents an investment of 55.5 million euros, mainly provided by the Seine-Saint-Denis department, the Ile-de-France region and the Greater Paris Metropolis,” explains Coline Hennebelle, director of operations for the departmental council’s buildings and logistics department. The building also hosted handball training sessions during the Olympic fortnight.

The competition for the operation of the facility was won by a group formed by the Union of Open-Air Sports Centres and the SOS Group. It will be based on the work previously carried out by the department, which has identified the types of public it will serve: sports committees, schools, the general public and companies. “with priority given to local actors”Laurent stresses.
