discovered a bug that deletes a document instead of saving it

This is an error that can be especially annoying: the most recent version of the Word word processor can delete, without prior notice, a document on which we have worked instead of saving it, its publisher Microsoft warns in a help message published on October 3. .

According to the company, this problem only occurs in very specific conditions: when you have tried to close Word without saving a document and you decide to do so through the “Save your changes” alert, giving it a name including the # or final character. with a series of uppercase characters (.DOCX or .RTF for example, these few extension letters allow you to define the type of file in question). Finally, these are only files that are saved in the computer’s memory, and not those that are saved online.

This issue, however, could worry a large number of users, as it affects version number 2409 of Word, shipped on September 23 to professional customers who benefit from the default update settings. Microsoft did not specify whether people who received this update could also be affected: questioned on this topic by the world (who attempted to reproduce this bug without success), the editor did not immediately respond to our questions.

Word users can check which version of the software they have by opening a document, then clicking “Files,” then “Account” and directing their attention to the right of “About Word.” It is also possible, explains Microsoft, to solve the problem by setting up a keyboard shortcut.

While waiting for a probable update, the publisher explains that victims of the error may find a backup copy of their document in the trash.
