According to The Daily Mail (DM), scientists have been carrying out a comparative analysis of the DNA of the bones discovered in the Cathedral of Seville for two decades with the DNA of relatives and descendants of Columbus.
In particular, the remains of his son Hernando and his brother Diego were examined. As a result, researchers were able to confirm the connection between them.
It is noted that Columbus’ body was moved several times, and some experts claimed that he was buried in the Dominican Republic, sparking a search for the explorer’s remains.
But now passions have calmed down, since the results of a study of the remains found in Spain confirm with “absolute certainty” that they belonged to the navigator.
Forensic expert Miguel Lorente, who led the investigation team, commented on the results of many years of work.
“Nowadays, with the help of new technologies, it is possible to check everything. “This finally confirms the theory that the remains of Seville belong to Christopher Columbus.” – said.
Now scientists have to determine the exact origin of the navigator. The question of whether it came from Genoa or other regions remains open.
Christopher Columbus is a Spanish navigator of Italian origin who discovered the New World (America) for Europeans in 1492.
Columbus was the first of the reliably known travelers to cross the Atlantic Ocean in the tropical and subtropical zone of the northern hemisphere and the first of the Europeans to sail in the Caribbean Sea and the Sargasso Sea.
