Biological evidence covers two of the five people investigated for the crime of Samuel Luiz. And above all, one gets stuck. National Police agents confirmed during this Thursday’s hearing that traces of Diego Montaña’s DNA were found on the victim’s face. But the evidence also points to Alejandro Freire, aka “Llumba.” In his case, his biological profile was found in the glass of a bottle at the place where the attack that resulted in the death of Samuel Luiz began in the early hours of July 3, 2021 in La Coruña.
The fact that DNA remains of these two defendants were found does not unequivocally identify them as the perpetrators of the crime; This of course does not exonerate the three other young people for whom there is no trace of a genetic profile. But of course, as the agents told the members of the jury during the session this Thursday – day 14 – Diego Montaña’s DNA appeared on the body of Samuel Luiz. This undoubtedly implies that there was “great friction” between the alleged perpetrator and the victim.
It was Diego Montaña who launched the attack. At the gates of the Andén pub, on the promenade near Riazor, Diego Montaña thought that Samuel Luiz and a friend were recording him with their cell phone, when in reality it was a video call with a friend who did not had no way out. that night. After threatening to kill him with homophobic insults, he lunged at him and started hitting him: This is what the cameras recorded, several witnesses – and some of the other defendants – said so, and now the police have confirmed at trial the established reports which supported the appearance of the aforementioned genetic profile. The victim, unable to defend himself, did not know any of his alleged attackers.
Llumba quickly joined the lynching of Samuel Luiz. During these more than three weeks of trial, numerous witnesses reported that it was he who threw the victim to the ground by grabbing his neck from behind. What officers defined as “mataleón,” a strangulation technique common in violent robberies. But Llumba is also compromised by DNA evidence. In his case, not found in the victim’s body, but in the glass of a bottle. Some witnesses reported that during the lynching, they heard glass breaking precisely at this location.
To all these indications against Diego Montaña and Llumba are added the accusations brought against them after the crime of Kaio Amaral, another of the accused. On July 5, 2021, two days after the events, and when no one had yet been arrested, Kaio Amaral presented himself to the police station because his name was circulating on social networks as the author of the attack. And in this witness statement, In addition to avoiding his responsibilities, he directly targeted Diego Montaña and Llumba.
This was recalled during the hearing this Thursday by the police sub-inspector who, at the time, was responsible for taking his statement, still as a witness. Kaio Amaral has since completely dissociated himself from the attack: “He told us a story in which he seems to just stare.” He also told them that he had only intervened to “separate” his friends and that he had lied to officers about the clothes he was wearing on the day of the crime, probably in an attempt to make his identification more difficult.
After the crime, the alleged perpetrators of the attack gathered in a city park, according to the interpretation of the accusations, in order to find an alibi given the seriousness of what happened. However, this quickly blew up and everyone went into an “every man for himself” race, pointing fingers at each other for the crime. Kaio Amaral did it in front of the police, pointing out Diego Montaña and Llumba, but this could also be verified in some Instagram messages from the latter, revealed by ABC, in which Llumba assured a friend that Kaio Amaral had given a blow kicked the victim while he was on the ground.
