The Blagoveshchensky District Court has sentenced Evgeny Bakaryukin, who ran over nine people on the sidewalk in June, to 14 years in a general regime colony, the press service of the courts of the Amur Region reports.
“He is also prohibited from driving a car for three years after serving the main sentence. In addition, according to the court’s decision, he must compensate the victims for material and moral damages.” – the message said.
The court added that the total moral damage that the driver must compensate the six victims is 15 million rubles.
The prosecutor requested 15 years in prison for the person responsible for the accident.
The accident occurred on 14 June on Vasilenko Street in Blagoveshchensk. Bakaryukin, in a drunken state, drove onto the pavement at high speed and ran over pedestrians standing there. A woman and two children, aged 14 and 15, died on the spot, another teenager, aged 15, and the woman later died in hospital. Four people, including two minors, were seriously injured.
After his arrest, Bakaryukin told the court that he deserved “the most severe punishment” because he had committed a “terrible crime.” He said he worked as a taxi driver and began fulfilling orders at 4:15 a.m. that day.
“I completed 33 orders and by lunch time I was tired. My friend and I drank about a 0.7 litre bottle of vodka. There is no justification for drunk driving.” – said.
