“Climate change threatens the rights of workers in traditional industries.”
Oku.Az Duresh Awar, regional president of the Pakistan Workers’ Federation, stated this at the roundtable on ‘Green Jobs and Skills’ held on the sidelines of COP29.
It said it represents more than 330 unions from 160 countries and around 200 million members:
“Climate change is no longer a distant threat, it is today’s reality and has a serious impact on workers in traditional industries, especially in the Global South. The biggest challenge of the climate crisis is the lack of protection of rights workers’ labor rights. This affects both workers’ rights to representation and collective bargaining, as well as job protection and security. In the Asia-Pacific region, it is not easy to find decent and climate-friendly jobs, and women are overrepresented in the sector priority and social protection measures are insufficient,” Avar added.
