Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González has taken refuge in the Spanish embassy in Caracas. several days agobefore Spanish authorities requested his transfer to Spain, sources close to him confirmed to ABC.
González has a daughter named Carolina who has lived and worked in Madrid for years. The opposition leader’s last visit to Spain was end of Februarywhen he was not yet a presidential candidate, to visit his daughter and grandchildren. He returned to Caracas in early March.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this morning that González had decided to leave his country and will be welcomed in Spainwhere he has been flying since this morning on board a plane of the Spanish armed forces.

“Edmundo González took off from Caracas to Spain on board a Spanish Air Force plane. The Spanish Government provided the diplomatic and material means necessary for his transfer, made to your request“, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement published on its website.
Fear of reprisals
Since the elections, González has remained in hiding, for fear of reprisals of the regime of Nicolas Maduro, who did not declare himself the winner of the elections but who refuses to show the electoral college records.
