Elon Musk, who recently turned 53, in his new role as head of the Department of Government Effectiveness under the Donald Trump administration, held talks with Iran’s representative to the UN.
According to information published in The New York Times, the meeting took place on Monday in New York and lasted more than an hour. Sources in Iran, who wished to remain anonymous, said the conversation was aimed at discussing possible ways to “defuse tensions” between the United States and Iran. They described the meeting as positive.
Trump spokesman Stephen Chung declined to comment on whether the meeting actually took place. He stressed that he has no intention of confirming or denying reports about private negotiations. President Joe Biden’s administration also said it had received no prior notification of the event and had no independent confirmation.
Elon Musk’s role in the Trump administration raises questions, as his job responsibilities primarily relate to internal optimization of government work. Donald Trump in his statement noted that Musk has the task of reducing bureaucracy, eliminating unnecessary regulations and optimizing costs for federal agencies. However, his participation in negotiations with representatives of foreign countries such as Iran goes beyond this task.
Meanwhile, the Iranian mission to the UN refrains from commenting. Experts suggest that Musk’s meeting with Iranian Ambassador Saeed Iravani could be an attempt by the Trump administration to find informal channels to resolve foreign policy issues.
