“Rivers, lakes and wetlands are important in the fight against the climate crisis, but they have always been neglected.”
Oku.Az This was stated by Eric Oyare, leader of the “Blue Heart of Africa” Initiative, at the event “Action for Water: Water Solutions for Climate Action”, held within the framework of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention. on Climate Change (COP29).
According to him, rivers, lakes and swamps play an important role in combating the climate crisis, increasing water and food security and ensuring sustainable development:
“However, these ecosystems have always been neglected and underestimated. Therefore, they are the most threatened ecosystems in the world. According to global reports, one-third of the world’s wetlands have been destroyed.”
He pointed out that in this sense the “Freshwater Challenge Initiative” plays an important role:
“To date, 47 countries have joined the initiative, along with the European Union. It will support governments with guidance and tools to help prioritize restoration actions for 2025-2030. The ‘Freshwater Challenge Initiative’ requires an overall investment to restore and protect these ecosystems.” Furthermore, the profitability of investments in this direction, including promoting the importance of nature-based solutions, will increase significantly.”
