This is not usual for a The city hall mourning the death of a city resident on its official website, and that’s what happened this week to Estelle with the person of Jose Torrecilla Iturmendi.
José Torrecilla resided with his wife Benilde at the San Jerónimo residence in the city of Ega for a few years now. He left us this Monday at the age of 95.after a life dedicated to writing about what was happening in Estella and its merindad.
A worker at the company “Curtidos Ruiz de Alda”, he was able, in his free time, to collect hundreds of photographs and documents of his city. Since the 60s he was a collaborator of “El Pensamiento Navarro”, “Norte Deportivo” to the most current Navarrese press, such as Diario de Navarra. He has written several books. One of them collected the 70 years of history of Izarra in 1990.

Estella City Council states: “He deeply regrets the death this morning of José Torrecilla Iturmendi at 95 years old and wishes to offer his condolences to his family and friends.
“Torrecilla, born in Oteiza in 1929, has lived in the city since he was 9 years old. He was elected “Estellés of the Year” in 2011 and launched the rocket announcing the festivities in 2015.”
“Throughout his professional life, in addition to working at Curtidos, he has collaborated as a columnist in different media, written several books on Estella-Lizarra and “He actively participated in social, cultural and sporting life.”
“Moreover, in 2011 donated its photographic and documentary archives to the Town Hall for its preservation.”
