The European Court of Justice has ruled that Slovakia has failed to fulfil its obligations to clean up 21 landfills, which could expose the country to heavy fines. Local media reported on this.
The European Commission has reportedly filed a lawsuit against Slovakia. According to the EU, the country’s authorities do not control the recovery process of landfills that have already been closed, but which still pose a threat to the environment and human health. At the same time, the court decision does not mean that Slovakia will have to pay a fine immediately, but this may happen in the future if the problem is not resolved.
Recall that there are 81 waste dumps in Slovakia, most of them located in the western regions of the country. Bratislava previously stated that the dump operators do not have sufficient funds to close them in accordance with EU rules. It was noted that in some cases they declared bankruptcy to avoid remediation costs.
