In Europe they believe that the possible return of Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States could cause a weakening of transatlantic ties. This was reported by The Washington Post, citing the opinions of 15 politicians and experts from five European countries.
European leaders believe that after their experience with Trump in 2017-2021, they are better prepared for his possible second presidency.
“They now know how to conduct diplomatic negotiations and are developing different strategies in case of trade and security crises,” the publication notes.
However, the preparation has not reduced concerns about Trump, who could threaten NATO, impose high tariffs on imports and withdraw from the Paris climate agreement. Politicians also acknowledge that in some ways Europe is less prepared than before to confront Trump.
During his first term, Trump encountered opposition from German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whom the Washington Post calls “a key figure in Europe.” Currently, there is no leader on the continent of such stature that can compete with him. French President Emmanuel Macron is politically weakened after losing his parliamentary majority. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is grappling with coalition divisions and the rise of the far right. New UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s approval rating has hit an all-time low.
Interviews with European politicians and analysts show that Europe will have to recognize its dependence on the United States, regardless of who ends up in the White House. However, much of the concern lies with Trump. Diplomats say a special team at EU headquarters is actively developing plans in case of his return to the presidency.
At the end of October it emerged that European Union members were discussing the possibility of introducing new sanctions against Russia if Trump were elected president. And in February 2024, there were reports that the EU was considering creating a continental alliance in case the United States refused to defend its European NATO allies after its return to power.

As a source told Axios, the US side warned Tehran against any action that could lead to an escalation of tensions in the region.
