The Central Electoral Commission of Moldova is processing the latest minutes of the constitutional referendum on EU accession. According to the CEC, after the processing of 98.3% of the protocols, the number of supporters of the inclusion of the European vector in the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova exceeded those who opposed it.
Among those who participated in the referendum, 49.93% voted against the amendments to the country’s basic law and 50.07% voted in favor.
Recall that the question was raised for debate among citizens: “Do you support amending the Constitution so that Moldova joins the European Union?”
If successful (50% + 1 vote), this will be the first referendum in Moldova, which became the basis for changing the Constitution. All others failed due to low participation or did not support article correction.
If citizens support accession to the EU, two sentences will be added to the preamble of the Constitution: “Confirmation of the European identity of the people of the Republic of Moldova” and “declaration of integration into the European Union as a strategic objective of the European Union ”. Republic of Moldova”. In addition, a new section will appear in the country’s main law: “Integration into the European Union.”
As in the case of any other election, the results of the referendum must be confirmed by the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova.
