The Portuguese Portuguese politician Chega, known for his anti -immigration policy, said in a message, which was notified on X on August 1, “85% of Muslim refugees.”

Chega previously faced accusations of Islamophobia, when the party leader Andre Ventura demanded a “radical reduction in the Islamic presence in the European Union.”

Deputy Chega Party Pedro Frasa also claimed that “instead of looking for asylums” in other Muslim countries, these people “prefer to flee to the West.”

Both statements are difficult to support with the help of evidence, since there are no accurate and increased elements that record religious integration of refugees.

Nevertheless, it is obvious that wars, economic crises and natural disasters affect the composition of the world population of refugees.

While the United Nations performs a huge amount of data about refugees and forcibly displaced around the world, they are largely based on government data. Some countries provide information about the religious integration of refugees, while others do not.

Where did the refugees come from 2024?

According to the UN UNKB, the global population of refugees, including people in need of international protection, reached almost 42.7 million in 2024.

In addition, 73.5 million people and 8.4 million people looking for asylum were moved within their borders.

In Europe, Germany was a European country, which took most refugees in 2024, which has been happening since 2015. A German government survey, published in 2021, showed that in the period from 2013 to 2019 69.7% of the refugees that they received were believers of Muslims.

Nevertheless, these figures preceded the complete invasion of Russia to Ukraine in early 2022, when millions of Ukrainians were forced to leave the country in the war.

The last elements of the UN UNCH have shown that in 2024, almost seven out of ten refugees and people in need of international protection were received from Syria, Afghanistan, South Sudan, Venezuela and Ukraine.

The main religion in Syria, Afghanistan and South Sudan is Islam, but in Ukraine and Venezuela there are various descendants of Christianity.

Since the Ukrainians and residents of Venezuela were almost one third of all refugees and other people who needed international protection in 2024, it is unlikely that 85% of refugees are Muslims, the UN representative said in Euroverify.

Although the country may have a Muslim majority in their population, this does not mean that all refugees emanating from there are Muslims, and vice versa. In addition, those who belong to the ethnic group associated with Islam may not be in the real loyal.

The states of most Muslims are at the top of the list of host countries

Contrary to the assertion that refugees of Muslim origin are primarily looking for refuge in the West, Germany is the only European country among the seven countries that have been accepted by the majority of persons seeking shelters since 2015.

Iran and Türkiye are two leading countries in which most refugees were looking for asylum in the period from 2015 to 2024.

Meanwhile, four of the seven states who received the majority of people seeking refuge during this period – Iran, Turkey, Chad and Pakistan are countries with the Muslim majority that rejects the statement that refugees who identify themselves as Muslims are looking for only asylum.
