Experts support Draghi report but do not believe it will be implemented

The 450 experts interviewed by PWC in their economic and commercial consensus, they support the measures proposed by the Report Draghi to recover the competitiveness of the European Unionbut they do not believe that they will be applied in practice.

89% of these experts agree with the diagnosis and recommendations presented Mario Draghi because “this is what Europe needs”. But, among this majority of supporters, 50% believe that the fragmentation and the political polarizationand the resistance of States to give in sovereignty will prevent their realization.

One of the measures with the most agreement (82%), for progress towards a true single market and for the EU to be able to compete with the United States and China, is relax competition rules which, in the opinion of those interviewed, “have significantly slowed down European industry”.

In this sense, 58% of those questioned go further and are in favor, in the specific case of the automobile sector, of the imposition of customs duties on chinese electric vehicles. However, 35% are wary of this measure, because they believe that “it will generate a trade war with bad consequences for everyone.”

In general (70%), experts, leaders and businessmen those who participate in the Consensus agree to report to excessive regulation as the main cause of the poor functioning of the EU, while 18% think that it is the factor “of the bad image it has among citizens”.

Panelists are divided when asked if they see the possibility of public-private investment between 750,000 and 800.00 million euros proposed by the Draghi report. 46% answer in the affirmative, while 52% believe the opposite, partly because they believe that companies are not able to invest such amounts of money.

In this sense, almost 60% of those questioned warn of the risk that these investments end up increasing debt of the EU without tangible results in the medium term.
