You don’t need to leave Spain to discover impressive landscapes. Extremadura hides real gems of nature. This region is home to a road between the waterfalls which has nothing to envy those of Northern Europe. This is the route of the Walnut Gorges located in the Jerte Valley.

The Garganta de las Nogaleas trail is one of the most popular walks in the Jerte Valley, Extremadura. This path is located in the Cáceres city of Navaconcejoof approximately 2,000 inhabitants.
The Extremadura hiking route has a length of approximately 6 kilometers and one Estimated duration 2 hours. The local road SL-CC 33 is marked in white and green and is famous for its impressive waterfalls. The route is generally easy, but there is a short and intense climb of about 300 meters of elevation gain.
The beginning is in the Old BridgeThe road begins to climb up to the Garganta de las Nogaleas offering a succession of waterfalls surrounded by lush vegetation. Oaks, alders, ash trees and hackberry trees will accompany you to the waterfalls, which are approximately 20 metres high.
After two kilometers of travel, you will arrive at the Iryda road from which you will continue walking for another kilometer and a half. In this section you can climb to see other waterfalls. Later you will return to the village by a zigzag path. between cherry trees and other fruit trees. During the descent you will see the town of Navaconcejo where this route ends.
What to see in Navaconcejo?
This commune is located in the middle of the basin. It started as a medieval council and in the 15th century it welcomed the inhabitants of “Peñahorcada”, destroyed by a flood of the Jerte River.
In this municipality you can see the old Calle Real, the old Fábrica de Sayales, the parish church of Navaconcejo, two baroque hermitages (that of Cristo del Valle and the church of San Jorge), the Casería, the viewpoint of San Jorge, natural pools and perform different hiking routes.
The most famous trails are the Walnut Gorgesthe Camino Real, with a length of approximately 10 kilometers, and the Cabezuela – Vía de la Plata route, with a length of approximately 37 kilometers. Finally, you can also do a cycle path in the Traslasierra mountains of about 45 kilometers and of great difficulty. The most daring can practice canyoning in the Nogaleas Gorge.
