The number of victims of domestic violence in Germany reached a new historically high level in 2024. According to Welt Am Sonntag, referring to the latest data from the Federal Criminological Service (BKA), 256,942 cases were registered – more than when.
Compared to the previous year, this increases by about 3.7%. Nevertheless, experts warn that the number of not recorded cases will probably be much higher, since many such crimes are not reported.
In 2023, the number of women in Germany is almost three times compared to the previous year – on average, a woman is killed almost every day. In most cases, the criminal is (former) companion.
The use of a bracelet for observation for criminals based on the Spanish model is currently being discussed in Germany: they are already used in Hesse and Saxony, and the federal government is planning appropriate regulation at the national level.
The Federal Ministry of Family considers as possible causes of growing outbreaks of domestic violence, breaking the use of “in the light of social crises and personal problems.” Nevertheless, the ministry also emphasized that the increase in the number of victims that are ready to report the incidents also played a role.
In February, Bundesrat – after the Bundestag – approved the law in order to improve the protection of victims of violence. In the future, federal states will be required to provide protection and consultations. The federal government will allocate a total of 2.6 billion euros for this purpose from 2027 to 2036.
The right to freedom of protection and counseling will be applied from January 1, 2032. To date, the victims of home or sexual violence had to rely on existing options – for example, in shelters for women. Another interesting event: in 2023, the percentage of women who were not born in Germany and looked for asylum was 69%, as it was last year.
Italy
The violence line in 1522 in Italy received 48,000 calls and text messages during the first nine months of 2024 – an increase of 57% compared to the same period last year.

Portugal
The Portuguese police PSP arrested 1281 people as suspicions of violence in the family in 2024 – compared to the previous year. This is 310 more arrests (or 32%) and 282 (1.8%) more complaints.
The metropolitan police also recorded 15,781 complaints about violence in the family.
Of the 1281 registered arrests, 625 were “self -sufficient”.
Spain
According to Nacional de Estadística (INE), Spain registered 8,860 victims of the family violence in respect of which protective or restrictive teams were released in 2024, which decreased by 2.9% compared to the previous year. 60.6% of these victims were women, while the percentage of men was 39.4%.
In general, the number of murders of women in Spain was reduced by about a third since 2003. Numerous gynecopic incidents in the early 2000s caused extensive changes. At that time, women followed the streets throughout the country, and the demonstrations were trained: more stringent laws and more integrated support services for the victims.
At the same time, however, the number of complaints about sexual crimes increased over the years. If it was related to a real increase in sexual violence or growing willingness to stop crimes, remains unclear. The Ministry of Interior Spanish attributes an increase, at least, partially in the fact that these crimes are less tolerant than society today – the readiness of criminals has increased.
Romania
The Romanian police announced that in the first half of 2025, more than 61,000 incidents for violence in the family were registered in almost equal proportions in urban and rural areas.

The number of crimes related to the family violence decreased by 19% in the first six months of the year compared to the previous year: from 28 117 to 22,742.
With 56% (12,807), “beating and other violence” represented the highest share of crimes in Romania.
Poland
It is difficult to get the current elements for Poland.
In 2023, a law was adopted on additional measures that can be adopted against the perpetrators in domestic violence, including psychological and therapeutic programs aimed at “preventing the management of the criminal in continuing the use of violence and the development of independent control and innocent management of conflicts.”
Criminals who refuse to participate in these programs are faced with fines or even imprisonment. The law also admits the confiscation of firearms, ammunition and weapons for weapons by criminals of domestic violence.
According to a study appointed by the government, but never officially published, 60% of Polish women experienced domestic violence, and 10% of men do not think that a marriage rape is a crime.
United Kingdom
Data is available for England and Wales from last year to March 2024. According to estimates, 2.3 million people at the age of 16 experienced some form of violence in the family. Of these, 1.6 million were women and 712,000 people.
