In the second part of “Inside Out”, anxiety, shame, envy and boredom suddenly appear in the protagonist’s control room to tame the usual joy, sadness, disgust, fear and anger . I imagine Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s “Inside Out” dominated by another character with a dark appearance, dark features, a suspicious look and a blasé expression: cynicism. Cynicism in Feijóo sends every other fundamental emotion to ostracism. Cynicism controls the controls of its brain machine like a NASA technician.
The RAE defines cynicism as “immodesty in lying or in defending and practicing vituperable actions or doctrines.” Some tend to think of cynicism as an advanced trait of intelligence, an attribute comparable to experience. I believe cynicism is an almost existential condition in politics, fraught with the worst of amorality and theatricality. Although total integrity does not exist in every human being, one cannot always be upright or honest without falling into the trap of cynicism.
