Feijóo defends granting asylum to Edmundo González “as elected president of Venezuela”

The leader of the PP, Alberto Nuñez Feijooassured this Monday that if he had been president of the government he would have granted political asylum to the Venezuelan opponent Edmundo Gonzalez if he had asked for it, but treating the elected president of Venezuela and at the same time demanding from the International Criminal Court (ICC) the arrest of Nicolas Maduro, as did former presidents Felipe González, José María Aznar and Mariano Rajoy on Friday.

This is what Feijóo said after Spain welcomed the Venezuelan opponent as political asylum. The Spanish government has put in place the diplomatic and material means necessary for his transfer, “carried out at his request,” the Foreign Affairs statement said.

In an interview with Antenna 3 The PP president indicated that “Today, Mr. Maduro is much happier than yesterday” because “he managed to get the leader who won the elections” in Venezuela “out of the country and is already in Spain.”

“So who won? So far Maduro. Who lost? Venezuelan democracy. It turns out that the democratic politician who won the elections had to leave the country and the dictator who lost them remains in the country and controls the government,” he said.

When asked what he would have done if he had been president of the government, Feijóo stressed that if in the first place he requested political asylum, “I would give it to him”, but Edmundo González added that he “would also have the treatment of the elected president of Venezuela.” defended, in statements collected by Europe Press.

“And third, I would join the ICC in calling for Maduro’s arrest, as Presidents González, Aznar and Rajoy did. Not President Zapatero, who is in every corner with Maduro and Sánchez,” he said.

Zapatero Reviews

The opposition leader stressed that if his party governed Spain and was in the Moncloa Palace would have “acted in a completely different way from the Spanish government” chaired by Pedro Sánchez.

“Political asylum yes, but for the elected president of Venezuela. And also, join the demand for the arrest of Mr. Maduro because he does not respect the democratic results in Venezuela and expels, as we have seen, in the face of threats from his prosecutor and his courts, the people who won the elections,” he added.

Asked about his criticism of former President Zapatero when his mediation was instrumental in González’s departure, Feijóo insisted that “the one who is happiest is Maduro” because “he managed to make the one who won the elections for him have to leave the country.”

“Maduro will celebrate the fact that the one who won the elections for him has left the country with the intermediation, it seems, of Zapatero and the Sánchez government. This is very bad news for democracy and very good news for Maduro,” he said.

Regarding Spanish politics, Feijóo referred to recent events, including the words spoken by the president before the PSOE Federal Commission this weekend. “If the president does not care what the legislature says and does not respect the regulations of the Conference of Presidents, these bilateral meetings no longer make sense,” he said.

According to him, “what Ayuso said is shared by the entire PP, that is, to talk about bilateral issues, the president will have us whenever he wants; but to talk about what belongs to everyone, he must summon everyone.”

The PP leader recalled that Sánchez had summoned him once to the Moncloa Palace and that he was always present there. “What you cannot do is call me to agree on something that goes against the equality of the Spanish people, because I will not do it. I will never come to support a president.”

According to Feijóo, “in reality, the debt that exists in Spain is that of the State, which is three times greater than the deficit of the autonomous communities.” (LACC). “Sánchez is going to forgive the debt for what?” “If Sánchez is the one with the most debts in Spain,” he concluded.

Feijóo acknowledged that “the most indebted autonomous communities are Catalonia, Valencia and Murcia.” Although he clarified that “these last two are because they receive less money than the others.” For the PP leader, “they are models” and what the Catalan concert does “is break the financing model and what we want is to reform it. It is about containing spending and spending well,” he concluded.
