Feijóo meets Meloni this Thursday during his tour for a European alliance against illegal immigration

PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo will meet this Thursday in Rome with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, as part of his tour for a European alliance against illegal immigration. Likewise, the opposition leader will meet with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who comes from the same European family as the popular Spanish.

Feijóo’s PP has acknowledged the work of countries such as Italy and Greece to reduce illegal immigration. The president of the Popular Party himself cited as an example the policy of these countries in managing the arrival of irregular migrants in their territory. “Why have the Greeks or the Italians reduced the number of irregular migrants entering their countries, and Spain, on the route to the Canary Islands, increased it by 50%?” Feijóo has stressed in recent weeks.

According to the PP leader, “Meloni has managed migration much better than Sánchez, that’s the truth.” Feijóo stressed that the agreements reached by the Italian executive “in the countries of origin to prevent human mafias from working and taking advantage of the lives of citizens,” he said in a recent interview with Public mirror (Antena 3).

For his part, the national spokesman of the PP, Borja Sémper, stressed last week that “the official data available to the PP and which operates within the EU show a significant decrease in irregular immigration in Greece and Italy, around 60%”, after years of “hardly manageable pressure”. These data show that “lives are being saved”, he added.

“The migration policy that Greece and Italy are developing, in common agreement with the European Union, saves lives, which is what we are asking the Spanish government to do: save lives because they are dying at sea,” Semper stressed during his press conference. the press conference in Genoa.

Before the meeting this Thursday in Rome, brought forward by The sixth, Feijóo already met last Friday in Athens with the Greek Prime Minister and President of New Democracy, Kyriákos Mitsotakis, as well as the Minister of Migration and Asylum, Nikos Panagiotopoulos.

After these meetings, Feijóo asked to take note of the model of political stability of Greece and proposed to promote a European alliance against irregular immigration. The president of the PP also highlighted the migration pact concluded with the Canary Islands against the “lack of control of immigration” and highlighted the measures envisaged in this treaty, such as the mobilization of European funds for border control, the intensification of border surveillance, involving Frontex; support for the Asylum Agency and public diplomacy in African countries.

Furthermore, the PP leader called for strengthening the fight against human trafficking and the role of Europol in its work against mafias; increasing the returns of irregulars and encouraging their readmission to their countries of origin; concluding new agreements with third countries of origin and transit and accelerating development cooperation agreements with these countries.
