The demonstration convened by the Madrid Forum on the occasion of the International Day of the elimination of violence against women began in Madrid at 7 p.m. this Monday, November 25, under the cry of “here we are abolitionist feminists”.
Protests break out against sexual violencegender violence, indirect violence, prostitution, sexism or surrogacy, among other issues. The voice was also given to “problems” faced by women with disabilities, calling for more visibility and demanding solutions for their accessibility to detection systems and care resources.
The organizers, with a banner under the motto “Fight sexism to eradicate violence against women”began marching through the street of Alcalá with slogans such as “if he hits you, he doesn’t love you” and carrying signs reading messages such as “women demand respect” .
As happened last year, some women were present dressed in “feminist enterprise”with white robes and masks. They carried signs in memory of the feminicides that have occurred in Spain so far in 2024, with the name of the victim, their age and the place where they were murdered.
In statements to the media before starting the march, Madrid Forum and the feminist movement Madrid residents valued what has been achieved so far in the fight against gender-based violence, but stressed that the 2004 law has become “obsolete” and called for “citizen unity and an institutional response” . According to him, “we cannot watch the net sink impassively” of gender violence.
Participants in the protest have had to experience tragic events in their lives, like Paloma, who lost her sister 17 years ago to a gender-based murder. This November 25 demands that the law protect the families of victims and that means of care and prevention be improved.
Another spokesperson, Marta Cárdoba, indicated that “there is no reason for there to be two different demonstrations on 25N” and, questioned by journalists, she mentioned the 8M Commissions: “We should ask them (the reasons), who are new in this field.”
The Minister for Equality took part in the demonstration, Ana Redondoaccompanied by other ministers and party colleagues. Redondo asked to fight against violence and denial, because “kill”.
It is one of two demonstrations taking place this Monday on the occasion of the International Day Against Violence Against Women in Madrid, which once again shows the division of feminism in the capital. Alongside the Madrid Forum, the one organized by 8M Commissionswith the motto “Together, fear changes sides”attended by representatives of Podemos and Sumar.
