Film about the Sep Ruf architect: Easy and transparency

The architecture of Post -War Modernism is experiencing difficult times today. Too often, she had a portioned concrete and glass in thin forms of a cube in wide green areas, where before the destruction of the war was a dense historical city. She shared city life in accordance with the functions, too engineering – to live on the street, shopping in the center – so that the outstanding psychoanalyst Alexander Mitssherlich warns only of the “Inhosphere of our cities” in his name of the book in 1965. “You will also be employees standing behind unified glass facades in the monotonium of the uniform, and he creates all the conditions that he plans, that he plans, that he plans, that he plans, what he plans.

To date, the concept of “dissatisfaction” has formed the perception of modernism of the post. What can be an elegant, light and close to people, the buildings of the Munich architect Sep Ruf Show. Director Johann Betz is now devoting a documentary to the Franz Joseph-SEP business farmer.

Or better: the image of the film. As if the public was supposed to be informed about the “master” of this architecture. Many of the RUFS, Betz buildings with modern witnesses, experts: inside, user: inside and residents: in detail inside, now he is under the protection of the monument.

Glass walls – also for the federal chancellor

The pavilion looks like a showcase with which Call and Egon Eiermann represented the federal republic at a world exhibition in Brussels in 1958. And the Chancellor Bungalo for Ludwig Erhard in Bonn is a minimalist sculpture made of two square flat roof pavilions with glass walls – from the then, that someone should not be in this.

Director Betz is developing what Sep Ruf is known in any case: in the 1950s before his death in 1982, he was a star in West Germany. With his architecture, the call, born in 1908, created the image of a democratic, progressive, freed from his Nazi past. Even if, as well known, the Federal Republican Society did not always break with national socialism, since the call, which was not in NSDAP, promised with the ease and transparency of its buildings.

And this is one of the moments where Betz does not have enough critical, current view of his subject. His portrait is somewhat dusty with the master’s artist -builder, a companion in the film in the warehouse “Mr. Professor” – Call also taught architecture.

And raised, in the form of a male form of FRG-NACHWARGESELLSCHAFT remains completely indisputable, in which Sep Ruf should have been not only a “charming” and “unfulfilled” figure, as shown, but also a well-connected entrepreneur. For example, in 1955, physicist Werner Heisenberg personally entrusted his friend SEP with the new construction of the Institute of Max Planck, which he headed in Munich and with a private villa. The building of the institute, of course, is beautiful: generously glazed offices, a glass gait, a free staircase for employees.

Most of the Sep Rufs architecture has been updated, the film is already conveying. For example, his decisions on a lack of housing in the early 1950s, when in a very low area, light and space, which were carried out so that pleasant apartments are also created for families.

Deal with history

Its administrative building Neue Maxburg in Munich applies to today’s debate in reconstruction, and also cleans the modern era of the Tabula-Rasa image. RUF and co-architect Theo Pabst received a fragment of the Vitterther castle abandoned otherwise and placed a new building, which additionally interpreted the facade of the Renaissance of Inventory.

Betz photographs are perfect, the camera drives with pure pictures through the interiors or with the help of drones of drones over the architecture of a brilliant in the summer light. Sometimes Betz allows several scenes to go through the scene in parallel or pushes out historical pictures – charming, secretaries in a balloon skirt on a roof terrace. This is all very composed, but also cheese. Especially because of the irrelevant sound, which is originally supplied on a scale of the fifties and rises between a skirt for a soft elevator, all this also looks like an advertising film that is removed within 96 minutes.

Rather, the details on the side are interesting: the old arms tubes from the war, a challenge built on balconies in the early 1950s from the absence of material. Or his invariably meager space even with luxurious villas: how does the current resident of Villa Ludwig Erhards ask in the film on Lake Tegernze, did the chancellor of the corps economic miracle fit on a small toilet?
