Finland could withdraw from anti-personnel mine ban convention: Stubb

Finland could withdraw in the near future from the Ottawa Convention banning antipersonnel mines due to the “Russian military threat.”

This statement was made on November 30 by the country’s president Suomi. Alejandro Stubbappearing on public broadcaster Yle’s popular morning show.

“The starting point is that our main threat is Russia, and we must respond to this threat in one way or another. “The world is very different from the era of the Ottawa Convention.” – he complained.

The Finnish president actually promised to first calmly find out what opportunities the country has and what its technological potential is.

“Let’s see what the response could be and how to modernize ground forces in this big picture.” – Stubb concluded.

According to him, in Finland safety comes first. The president boasted that Helsinki is “doing a good job” responding to the threats. He cited the decision to join NATO as an example of such a reaction.

Let us remember that the Ottawa Convention prohibits the use, storage, production and transfer of antipersonnel mines and requires their destruction. It was signed on December 3, 1997 and entered into force on March 1, 1999. 163 countries have acceded to the convention.

Previously EADaily reported that the Teboil company, belonging to Lukoil, is opening new gas stations and service stations in the Finnish cities of Helsinki, Luumäki, Oulu and Tuusula.
