Firefighter dies during rescue work in Vienna

Austria is struggling with the consequences of heavy rains that caused flooding. Today, September 15, in the morning, the maximum wave reached Vienna. The mass evacuation of residents of the Austrian capital has begun. Unfortunately, one firefighter died.

The situation in the Austrian capital is becoming increasingly dire. In the past 24 hours, Vienna’s fire brigade has been called out more than 1,000 times to respond to heavy rain. In several places, the Danube has burst its banks and flooded nearby houses.

A firefighter has died during flood control operations in the Tulln region of Lower Austria, the Austrian state’s crisis response centre said. The tragedy occurred while they were pumping water from the basement of one of the buildings.

Severe flooding is also taking place in the Czech Republic and southern Poland. In the Polish town of Strone Śląskie, a dam was destroyed, leaving the town completely flooded. There are photos on Polish social media showing ruined houses and even a fire truck under water in Strone Śląsk.
