The Government of the Canary Islands has declared a pre-alert situation due to the risk of forest fires on the islands of El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife and Gran Canaria, from 8 a.m. today Thursday.
This decision, unusual at this time of year, is based on information from the National Meteorological Agency and in accordance with the Special Plan for Civil Protection and Emergency Response to Forest Fires of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (INFOCA).
In the case of Gran Canaria, the pre-alert in case of fire risk will be issued by the height 400 meters above sea level, before the arrival of an episode of dry and warm air, accompanied by southerly and southeasterly winds, which will cause leeward accelerations to the north and west of the islands, and which will be added to the meteorological drought long-term on the eastern, southern and western slopes of the islands.
A temperature inversion is also expected at low levels, with relative humidity less than 30% of ambient temperature. 600 meters high on Friday and 400 meters on the weekend.
The General Directorate of Emergencies warns against the danger of throwing cigarette butts or lit matches, using pyrotechnic materials or leaving garbage in mountain areas, and asks the population to remove branches that touch the facades of houses and to have basic tools such as pipes and axes. , and some water reserves.
