Five trucks burn in La Coruña garbage collection company after months of conflict

Several trucks from the company that provides the garbage collection service in La Coruña, Prezero, burned this Monday. The vehicles were in the company’s warehouse on Severo Ochoa Street, in the industrial area of Agrela, reports Europa Press. Sources close to the company quoted by the newspaper The voice of Galicia They suggest the fire was intentional.

The warning was given at 4:15 p.m. It was a workshop worker who raised the alarm. The firefighters of A Coruña, who are still working to put out the fire, as well as police officers, went to the scene.

These events come after a month-and-a-half strike in the collection service, called by the Cleaning Workers Union (STL), which is under investigation by the judiciary for alleged corruption and the creation of a “criminal network”. The strike, during which numerous fires were reported in containers affecting vehicles and buildings, led the municipality to declare a state of health emergency and hire another company to dispose of part of the accumulated waste. Conflicts in the service are recurrent and, in fact, on other occasions, such as in 2022, a health emergency has already been declared for the same reason.

This latest strike began on June 24, the day when the waste from the celebration of San Xoán, one of the most important in the city, accumulated in the streets. After a month and a half of protests, the workers decided in early August to end them. During these weeks, Prezero announced several disciplinary dismissals, including that of the president of the works council and leader of the STL, Miguel Ángel Sánchez Fuentes, one of those questioned by the courts. He also dismissed two other members of the committee. He blames them for irregularities in the strike.
