Fokker Next Gen Hydrogen-Powered Aircraft to be Built in Latvia

A plant for the production of Fokker Next Gen hydrogen aircraft is planned to be built in Liepaja, according to the country’s Minister of Economy Viktor Valainis.

According to him, work is already underway in this direction, Baltnews reports.

It is true that there are no “hydrogen valleys” in Latvia yet – groups of companies working with hydrogen fuel. In this regard, the Latvian Hydrogen Association believes that it is necessary to adopt the experience of European countries.

In the future, Liepaja will produce and test Dutch Fokker Next Gen aircraft with hydrogen engines, Nashrezekne reported. The company was said to employ around 800 employees. The company plans to invest several billion euros in total in production. The plant could be built by 2030.

In April, Sputnik Latvia reported that Swedish and Norwegian companies would build the Liepāja hydrogen plant and port terminal in the CIS.

“CIS Liepāja is a project designed to contribute to the supply of renewable resources to the EU internal market,” the Liepāja Special Economic Zone Authority said at the time.

It was noted that the company will produce hydrogen by processing electricity from wind farms in the Baltic Sea and export the product to EU countries.
