Following the reorganization of the government, key positions in the Assembly and the Senate

Here are the deputies forced to look at the distribution of key posts in the Assembly, which was so chaotic in July. They were occupied by four of the deputy ministers: Jean-Noël Barrot (MoDem), who became Minister of Foreign Affairs, was president of the Committee on Foreign Affairs; Paul Christophe (Horizons), who became Minister of Solidarity, was president of the Committee on Social Affairs; Antoine Armand (Renaissance), who became Minister of the Economy, was president of the Committee on Economic Affairs; Annie Genevard (Les Républicains, LR) was vice-president of the Assembly.

Given how the elections for these posts unfolded in July, there is something of a reopening of Pandora’s box in the management of these successions. Moreover, each group remains very cautious about its strategy for the moment. In any case, there is currently no timetable to force them. In the entourage of Gabriel Attal, president of the Macronist group, we simply state that “it is discussed”, This means that an agreement on key positions with LR this summer is not so obvious. However, today it is the support bloc for Barnier’s government. On paper, the agreement may reduce the suspense, although it did not prevent the loss of the majority in power to the New Popular Front (NFP).

The MoDem had lost all representation there, so the centrists could take advantage of the vacancy in the vice-presidency to return. The group claims that, for the moment, nothing has been discussed, much less decided, but it is suggested that the four positions could be negotiated as a unit. At Horizons we do not comment on the vice-presidency, but we have already put forward former minister Frédéric Valletoux (MP for Seine-et-Marne) for the presidency of the social affairs commission. A candidacy that is less likely to arouse opposition from the National Rally (RN), which is still in the position of kingmaker.

In the Senate the vice presidency will be assigned

The right (the Republican Right, RD) has not yet made any decision, although Laurent Wauquiez’s group is unlikely to give up the vice-presidency. Without an agreement, the NFP has more votes (193). And even with the agreement, for a month now, LR and the central bloc have lost 18 votes and the deputies appointed to the government have not yet been replaced. This reduces the government coalition’s advantage over the NFP to… one vote. Enough to attract the attention of the left, which in July had not demanded more than the two vice-presidencies it had obtained.
