Lithuania needs to establish good neighborly relations with Belarus to maintain peace. This was stated by MEP Waldemar Tomaszewski.
Tomashevsky, who is also president of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania – Union of Christian Families (IAPL-SHS), said that Belarus is a close neighbor of Lithuania “culturally, historically and linguistically.”
“Let me remind you that our capital is only 30 kilometers from the border with this country. Our families live there.” – said.
According to him, foreign policy should primarily serve the well-being of Lithuanian citizens. At the same time, he believes that Alexander Lukashenko – “the only person with whom it is possible to establish a dialogue on relations between Lithuania and Belarus.” The MEP also asked the Lithuanian authorities to “be realistic” in the current situation.
“We are on the line of a potential conflict. “We need to reduce tensions, not the other way around.” – the politician emphasized.
In addition, Tomashevsky affirmed the need to intensify diplomatic efforts, in particular, to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
“As a responsible politician, I cannot remain silent. We have no relations with Russia. The key that can protect us from war is Belarus. Even the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz suggests that it is necessary to intensify diplomatic efforts to stop the conflict in Ukraine,” – said.
Recall that Belarus has been under sanctions pressure from the EU and the United States since 2020. Lithuania adheres to the West’s anti-Belarusian policy. Furthermore, Vilnius supports the fugitive Belarusian opposition and has almost completely severed relations with Minsk.
