Magán City Hall has once again formally requested the Tagus Hydrographic Confederation (CHT) to clean the Puchereros stream channel. that crosses the municipal area of this city of Toledo, works that its mayor, José Luis Martínez, considers necessary to avoid a flood like that of September 2023, which caused damage of a million dollars in the municipality. The request addressed to the basin organization is accompanied by a report prepared by the municipal architect which includes photographs of the condition of the stream banks and existing canals in this municipality of Sagreño.
“As shown in the graphic documentation that accompanies the report, the stream bed is in a poor state of conservation due to the amount of waste and existing weeds, a circumstance that contributes to its poor flow, which generates stagnation, bad odors and pests», Specifies the municipal report.
The Magán City Council has already taken the Hydrographic Confederation to court for not having carried out the cleaning work on the Puchereros stream. The conflict of jurisdiction was resolved in 2020 in favor of municipal interests since a judgment of the Administrative Dispute Chamber of the Superior Court of Justice of Castile-La Mancha forced the CHT to take charge of the conservation work of this course of ‘water.
“A thousand times worse”
“After the DANA flood last year, they cleaned up but they did it on a very small part, but Today the current is a thousand times worse than it was.“, explains the mayor of Magán, José Luis Martínez, who believes that the Confederation cannot continue to do abandonment of their functions despite the court decision. Among other things because the Town Hall, in addition to not being competent, does not have the financial capacity to carry out this type of work. “It’s a fortune,” says Martínez, who remembers that “one time we cleaned a canal and they wanted to sue us for it.”
Even though a little more than a year has passed, Magán still remembers the situation that caused the DANA of 2023 and which has now been revived with what happened in Valencia, Letur and Mira at the end of last October . “There were no deaths here, but the destruction was enormous because the entire municipality was devastated by the flood,” recalls the mayor of Magán, who believes that cleaning the stream bed would help minimize the damage. risk of very destructive flooding. In this sense, let us remember that The Town Hall spent two million euros to repair the damage caused by DANA.
