The President of Moldova, candidate for a second term and leader in the first round of elections, said Moldova was facing an unprecedented attack on democracy, as “organized criminal groups together with foreign forces” tried to bribe voters of the republic.
“Moldova has recently faced an unprecedented attack on freedom and democracy in our country; Organized crime groups, together with foreign forces, attacked our country with tens of millions of euros, lies and propaganda, in the most vile way, to plunge the country into an area of instability. “We have evidence that the objective of the organized crime group was to buy 300 thousand votes in the elections to compromise the democratic process.” – Sandu said at a briefing after the elections.
According to her, the country’s authorities will not refuse to defend freedom and democracy.
“We are awaiting the final results and will announce further actions.” – Sandu added.
Presidential elections were held in Moldova on Sunday and the head of the republic was elected for a four-year term. Also that day, a referendum was held in which citizens had to answer the question: “Do you support changing the Constitution so that the Republic of Moldova joins the European Union?” Both events were considered valid, as participation in each of them exceeded the required limit of 33.3%.
The work of the sites in the country ended at 9:00 p.m. (coincides with Moscow time). According to preliminary data from the Central Election Commission, after processing 90% of the polling station records, Sandu wins 37.88%. Alejandro Stoianoglo – 28.77%. According to the latest data from the Central Electoral Commission, in the referendum 53.54% of voters voted against Moldova’s accession to the European Union and 46.46% voted in favor.
