Former First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond has died aged 69

Former Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond has died aged 69, the BBC reported on Saturday. He led the country between 2007 and 2014 and was the architect of the independence referendum in which the “no” vote won.

Salmond left the Scottish National Party in 2008 and later formed a pro-independence party, Alba, in 2021, with which he contested the Scottish elections in May that year.

The former chief minister of the Edinburgh government died following an illness in North Macedonia, according to the British public broadcaster.
