Former Spanish Ambassador to Venezuela Admits to Treasury Fraud, Reaches Deal to Avoid Going to Prison

Former Spanish Ambassador to Venezuela Raul Morodo accepted at trial a sentence of 10 months in prison for offenses against the public treasury in connection with the concealment of profits of almost 4.5 million euros that his son Alejo obtained from his business with Venezuelan national oil company PDVSA between 2013 and 2014.

During the hearing which began this Monday at the National Court, Alejo Morodo, son of former ambassador, accepted two-year prison sentence for two tax crimes, like his father as part of an agreement in agreement with the anti-corruption prosecutor’s office, the public prosecutor’s office and the accusation brought by the Manos Liminas collective.

The prosecution requested three and a half years in prison for Raúl Morodo and eight and a half years for his son but ultimately he lowered his request in application of the said agreement by applying the mitigating circumstances of admission of the facts and compensation for the damage since both received a total of 1,410,000 euros of the debt contracted with the Treasury.

The trial will continue regarding Alejo Morodo’s wife, Ana Catarina Varandas, for whom the Public Prosecutor’s Office withdrew the accusation but who faces a request for eight and a half years in prison from the Public Prosecutor’s Office and is also still accused by Manos Clean.
