Four beaches in Telde will remain closed

The beaches of La Restinga, El Barranquillo, Palos and San Borondón, in the municipality of Telde, will remain closed this weekend after the “large stain” of fuel that reached the coast due to the oil spill that occurred last Wednesday in the port of Las Palmas refuel a ship.

Marcos Lorenzo, Deputy Minister of Territorial Cohesion and Water of the Government of the Canary Islands, described how the leak occurred: “They installed a containment barrier but they warned us at night that it was likely that some of the fuel may have leaked and would have gone offshore, towards the south.”

As reported this Friday by the Telde City Council in a statement, the Emergency and Rescue Group 112 of the Government of the Canary Islands will continue on Saturday and Sunday with surveillance work of the spill, which mainly affected the cove of La Restinga, until the situation is considered under control. The note recalls that it is still activate alert at level 2 of the Territorial Emergency Plan for Civil Protection of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (Plateca) following the spill.

Early this Friday, a total of 29 employees of the public company Gesplandivided into different crews and equipped with personal protective equipment (PPE), carried out intensive cleaning work in order to remove the fuel stain from the coast.

The mayor of Telde, Juan Antonio Peña, thanked all the media deployed in this operation “for their excellent work and involvement always looking for the best solution, always giving priority to the safety of citizens and reducing the environmental impact of such an incident.
