Four series and a movie to watch with the family to brighten up the start of the school year

After the excitement of the start of the school year, you have to face facts: the weather is lousy, the days are getting shorter, and the next vacation is a month away. To soften sunless weekends or end a gloomy day on a lighter note, here are five ideas tried and approved by our in-house family panel.

“The Rookie.” The Los Angeles Cop: Welcome to the Blues

Very popular among pre-teens, the series. The rookie is a good choice for a family time, with its hero in the midst of a midlife crisis, with which any slightly tired parent can identify. John Nolan has just divorced, his children are grown and he doesn’t know what to do with himself. Witnessing a robbery, he discovers a late vocation for maintaining order and joins the ranks of the Los Angeles police after returning to his studies. Unwelcome by mocking classmates, the new kid (rookie) must prove his worth alongside his two classmates, younger but not necessarily more comfortable. With some explanations, the series is accessible from 12 years old, or even 10 for the more mature.

Series created by Alexi Hawley. Starring Nathan Fillion, Alyssa Díaz, Richard T. Jones. (United States, 2018). Three seasons available on Netflix.

“Supergirl”: In the Superman family, here is the cousin

Those who have seen the series. Girls on the busAiring since June on Max, Melissa Benoist may have recognized a familiar face for children: before playing a journalist covering an election campaign, she put on the Supergirl suit., Superman’s distant cousin, for six seasons. With her mischievous face and priceless expressions, she greatly raises the level of this rather flat production, a very opportunistic variation of the superhero in blue tights, aimed at a young audience. However, it would be a shame to miss it completely, because the series, calibrated for the general public, has very funny moments, especially if we encourage children (from 10 years old) to watch it in the original version. A nod to parents: the appearances of Calista Flockhart, the Ally McBeal of the 90s, delightful as a media boss straight out of The devil wears prada.

Series created by Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler. Starring Melissa Benoist, Chyler Leigh, David Harewood (United States, 2015-2021). Six seasons available on Netflix.

“The Thundermans”: a family like any other

Another big hit of the moment, The Thundermans It is an ideal sitcom for young people (from 6 years old). The idea is good, since it involves filming the domestic life of a family of superheroes (a couple and their four children) very middle class. While dad struggles with his love handles, mom does her best to juggle parent-teacher meetings, and the kids get up to the usual antics of their age, all in between two missions to save the world. A big draw of the series, a rabbit with a big tongue serves as the Thundermans’ pet, and his slightly irritating humor is reminiscent of Alf, the alien from our childhood. The bonus: the series is available as a movie, The return of the Thundermansby Trevor Kirchner, currently watching on Paramount+.
