France will not fulfill its promise to allocate €3 billion in aid to Ukraine this year. This was stated by the country’s Minister of Defense, Sebastián Lecornu, Politico reports.
“At the beginning of 2024, the political decision was made that this aid could reach 3 billion euros. In reality, it will be more than 2,000 million euros, but not 3,000 million euros.” – said Lecornu, quoted by the publication “País”.
According to the head of the Ministry of Defense, additional funds to help Ukraine will not be requested from Parliament until the end of the year.
The decision to allocate up to €3 billion to kyiv in 2024 was enshrined in the bilateral security agreement between Ukraine and France, signed Vladimir Zelensky AND Emmanuel Macron in February. However, Paris was forced to reduce spending on aid to Ukraine, as this year’s budget deficit could amount to approximately 6% of the country’s GDP, the newspaper writes.
It should be noted that France is not the only country facing a similar problem; Germany is also experiencing similar difficulties.
