The future American ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabeeappointed this Tuesday by President-elect Donald Trump, said that “Of course” the new administration could support a annexation of the West Bank by the Hebrew State, a few days after the Israeli Minister of Finance, Bezalel Smotrich, claimed to see in the Republican tycoon’s victory an “opportunity” for “sovereignty” in the Palestinian territories.
Huckabee made the statement on Israeli Army Radio on Wednesday when asked if “the West Bank could be annexed during Trump’s term.”
“Of course, but it is the president who will decide the policy. The people of Israel deserve a secure country. Anything I can do to satisfy that will be a privilege,” the former Arkansas governor responded.
These words come just a day after Trump named him the next ambassador to Israel, a key diplomatic post taking into account regional tensions and the different fronts open to the Israeli army.
In announcing the nomination, Trump emphasized about Huckabee that “love Israel and the people of Israel and who “will work tirelessly to achieve peace
in the Middle East.
Against the ceasefire
The former governor has spoken out in recent months about the war in the Middle East and defended positions opposed to the ceasefire as a bargaining chip to facilitate negotiations with Hamas, since he considers that dialogue should not be established with a terrorist group and advocates its total elimination.
The statements also come after this Monday, the Israeli minister Smotrich claimed that Trump’s election to the White House represents a “significant opportunity” for Israel to gain “sovereignty” over the West Bank.
“We are one step away from obtaining the sovereignty in the colonies of Judea and Samaria “This is the biblical name for the West Bank – and now is the time to give it,” the far-right politician said at the time.
The minister even put 2025 as the date for this stage, which would involve consolidating the current occupation.
These controversial statements have already been condemned by the Palestinian Authority, the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), the European Union, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which includes 56 states, and among others the governments of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United States.
