Gabriel Attal facing complicated projects at the head of Renaissance

How many will vote to appoint the 150 members of the national council, a kind of party parliament? The number of members is the only unknown at the Renaissance Congress, which will be held on Saturday, November 23 and Sunday, November 24 in Paris. A meeting that marks the first step in the process of appointing Gabriel Attal as head of the presidential party, the latter being the only candidate in the running. A few days before the elections, less than 10,000 were up to date with their contributions, while in 2017, after Emmanuel Macron’s victory in the presidential elections, his En march! claimed that almost 400,000 members had joined for free.

The loss of his membership is only the least of the worries of the former prime minister, who must be appointed general secretary of the party on December 8 – replacing Stéphane Séjourné, appointed European commissioner – after the vote of a body of electors, composed of essentially the 150 members of the national council.

Among the projects that Gabriel Attal will have to carry out, he will have to work to resolve the existential crisis that the presidential party is going through, whose political line has been summarized, in recent months, in opposition to any tax increase and has “the fight against extremes”. Departmental officials, first “walkers”, former ministers… They all give their advice to the future head of the party to rekindle the flame.

Some advocate “get out of excess” (neither left nor right), when others ask him to leave” even more » on this path, who are joined by those who insist on “be more firm on immigration” and those who want “a rebalance to the left.” Without forgetting, of course, the supporters of proportional voting.

The Renaissance must be ready for the municipal elections in 2026. In this case, too, almost everything must be rebuilt. After the bitter failure of the 2020 campaign, in which the presidential party did not win any major cities, this time it intends to trust its opposition municipal councilors. This will not be enough and Gabriel Attal will have to manage to negotiate alliances with the right. It is not easy, because before the municipal elections, a dissolution of the National Assembly and new early legislative elections could take place in the summer of 2025. Those of June 30 and July 7 left a bitter taste for the Renaissance candidates, who increased their criticism against the party, accused of not having made enough resources at their disposal.
