Galician CPI remains at 2.3% in August due to rising hotel and housing prices

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in Galicia stood at 2.3% in interannual rate, the same data recorded in the whole of Spain, without variation compared to the month of July, which is explained by the increase in the prices in restaurants and hotelsparticularly in demand this month of the year, and in household consumption (housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels), according to data published this Thursday by the Galician Institute of Statistics (IGE). A moderation of the price index that has occurred since last May, when it was recorded at 4%, and which decreased in June (3.7%) and July (3.1%).

Observing separately the motivations of inflation during the month of August in the Galician community, within the 2% parameter agreed by the European Central Bank (ECB), the increase compared to the same month of the previous year is noted. 3.9% on housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuelss, as well as the 5.6% increase in hotel and restaurant prices during the month when demand for these services is highest in Galicia and Spain.

The year-on-year prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco (3.1%), education (2.9%), health (2.6%) and recreation and culture (1.8%) also increased, to a lesser extent. On the other hand, compared to August 2023, prices decreased in the transport consumption (1.3% less) and in the communications (-0.3%). If we compare prices with the increases recorded in July, the differences do not exceed one percentage point in any case, except in leisure and culture, which increased by 1% between the two months.

Regarding the evolution of prices recorded in the August heading index, with specific products, the i13.1% increase in oils and fatsalthough it fell by 1.2% compared to July, in Spain as a whole it rose to 19.4% year-on-year. The price of sheep meat also increased by 7.9% compared to the previous year, almost double that of beef (3.2%), or that of fresh and frozen fish (which increased by 3.1% compared to the 1.8% recorded in Spain as a whole).

Inflation has also affected other products such as coffee, cocoa and infusions (6.4%)tobacco (5.2%), intercity public transport (5.7%), legume and vegetable preparations (5%), mineral waters, soft drinks and juices (5.2%), potatoes and their preparations (4.9%) and sugar (3.6%). On the other hand, decreases were recorded in the price of milk (-3.2%) and dairy products (-0.6%), as well as in that of canned fruits and nuts (-2.3%), or in textiles and household accessories (-2.3%). %).
