Vice President Kamala Harris’ lead over former President Donald Trump narrowed to one percentage point in the final stages of the US presidential race: from 44% to 43%, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll published on October 29.
The three-day poll, which ran from Oct. 24 to Oct. 27, showed that candidates from both parties had a nearly equal chance of winning ahead of the Nov. 5 election.
While Harris has led Trump in every Reuters/Ipsos poll since she entered the race in July, her lead has been steadily shrinking since late September. The previous poll, conducted from October 16 to 21, showed Harris leading Trump by two percentage points.
A new poll of 975 registered voters nationwide reportedly shows Trump with a significant lead over Harris on several issues voters consider most pressing.
When asked which of the two candidates is better at addressing issues of the economy, unemployment and employment, respondents chose Trump between 47% and 37%. Throughout the campaign, Trump had an advantage on economic issues, the agency wrote.
Reuters suggested Trump’s biggest advantage on domestic policy may be on immigration, where he has put forward tough proposals that include mass deportations of immigrants in the country illegally. About 48% of voters in the latest poll said Trump’s approach to immigration was the best, up from 33% who chose Harris.
The poll also showed that Harris’ lead on political extremism was narrowing. About 40% of voters said they have a better approach to combating political extremism and threats to democracy, compared with 38% who chose Trump.
Reuters believes that Harris’ slight lead over Trump “may not be enough” to win the election, even if it persists until November 5, Izvestia clarifies.
