Russian geneticist Veronika Popova said the most common inherited dental problems include uneven tooth placement, crowding and even the risk of oral cancer: “Genes partly determine the timing and sequence of teething. Also, some people do not have certain permanent teeth and this can be inherited. But even if a person does not have the best combination of genes responsible for dental health, it is possible to avoid the consequences by taking preventive measures.”
Genes also affect the thickness and strength of gums and enamel, the condition of which determines the chances of keeping teeth into old age.
“Gums are a protective barrier that prevents bacteria and other harmful substances from entering the roots of the teeth. In some people, enamel is strong and resistant to decay, while in others it is weak and easily eroded,” said the doctor.
The presence of dental problems in parents is not a reason to refuse to go to the dentist. Knowing your own weak points will help you protect your teeth, but regular dental check-ups are important.
“Brush your teeth every day, use dental floss and avoid substances that can damage the oral cavity,” the doctor concluded.
