Geomagnetic storm is at its peak – Oxu.az

“Currently, the geomagnetic storm is observed at its maximum in many parts of the world, as well as in our country.”

This was stated in an interview with AZERTAC regional correspondent Sabahaddin Alishov, a scientist at the Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory named after Nasireddin Tusi.

According to him, active and quiet periods on the Sun alternate approximately every 11 years. Currently, the Sun is close to the maximum of its 11-year activity, so geomagnetic storms often occur.

“Over the past week, the Sun’s activity has increased again, and the last X4.5 flare has occurred. The flare that occurred in region number 3825 on September 14 was accompanied by a coronal mass ejection (plasma ejection). The effect of plasma ejection on Earth usually lasts 2-3 days, as similar processes have occurred in the previous days. Since yesterday, they were expected to have an impact at the level of a geomagnetic storm, although a G3-level geomagnetic storm was forecast. The storm’s strength increased from the early hours of the day, and at 07:00 local time it was recorded as a G4 storm. “The geomagnetic storm continues. The geomagnetic storm also caused the appearance of the northern lights in the northern latitudes,” S. Alishov added.
