In its third and final reading, the Georgian parliament adopted a package of bills aimed at protecting family values and children. The new law bans LGBT propaganda, same-sex marriages, adoption of children by non-heterosexuals, as well as medical manipulations for gender reassignment in the country.

MP Rati Ionatamishvili from the ruling Georgian Dream Party stressed that the adoption of such a law is unusual, as it fully reflects the order and interests of Georgian society. According to the MP, this was confirmed by the crowds that took to the streets of Georgian cities on May 17, the Day of the Sanctity of the Family and Respect for Parents.
“Every responsible government must listen to its people, make decisions on behalf of its people, not foreign forces and clients,” Ionatamishvili said.
He also noted that the work on the draft law showed who really protects human rights and minors from harmful influences in the country.
It is noteworthy that the opposition “ran away” from parliament due to the discussion of this law. However, in the plenary session, 84 deputies voted in favour of the law and none voted against it. The law will be sent to President Salome Zurabishvili for signature.
