Georgian Dream has again started the impeachment process against the president

Georgian Dream is once again launching impeachment proceedings against President Salomé Zurabishvili, Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili announced at a briefing on October 7.

According to him, the lawsuit will be presented to the Constitutional Court.

The reason is the same as in 2023: Zurabishvili’s visits abroad are not coordinated with the government, as required by Georgian law.

Papuashvili explained that the lawsuit will be presented to the Constitutional Court before the parliamentary elections on October 26 and the issue will be put to a vote in parliament in one of the first meetings after the elections. The ruling party is confident of obtaining a constitutional majority in the elections and this time “Dream” will have enough votes to carry out the impeachment. In this case, President Zurabishvili’s term will be reduced by one month.

As Papuashvili explained, this step is symbolic in nature, so that “the violator of the Constitution Salomé Zurabishvili will go down in history not only as a former president, but as a suspended president.”

Last week, Zurabishvili went on another tour of European countries and spoke with leaders, particularly from Germany and France, about how the opposition should win the parliamentary elections.
